CHICKAMAUGA LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS' ASSOCIATION

History behind the CHICKAMAUGA LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS' ASSOCIATION

The Chickamauga Lake Property Owners’ Association was organized in 1996 when TVA came out with their Shoreline Management Initiative (SMI) which among other things proposed requiring lake front property owners to maintain a buffer zone of vegetation on the marginal strip of TVA’S land between our property line and the water, as well as a one-time $1,000 deposit and $100 annual fee on new docks and boathouses. We were instrumental in bringing these concerns to the attention of the homeowners, and we worked with our State Representative and Congress and fought to keep TVA from implementing these changes. We organized to give lake front property owners a voice in decisions made by TVA which affect the property values and enjoyment of our property. We are non-profit, chartered and registered with The State of Tennessee.

The purpose of our organization is “to maintain, support and protect the rights of lake property owners and lake users while encouraging and promoting good and practical stewardship of Chickamauga Lake, including its ecology, water quality, resource management and aesthetics.”

For several years we had no issues brought forward but now we have a problem with aquatic weeds and according to Brett Hartis, Ph.D., with TVA, this problem does not appear to be going away anytime soon.  However, we are able to work with three companies for treatment of the aquatic weeds: Estate Management Services, Inc., Aqua Services, Inc., and Lake Weed Controls.  Each of these companies give a discount for CLPOA members and base their discounts upon the number of members that sign up with them.

Currently, the potential invasion of asian silver carp has been in the news. These fish are a menace anytime they get in and over populate a water system. The Tennessee Wildlife Federation has received a twenty-five million dollar grant to stem the tide of this very problematic species. Hopefully, with the implementation of different types of detterent systems the tide can be turned denying the fish unabated access into the lake. Recently, TVA did a survey taking opinions on how (if any) the public would like to see them respond to the issue. We will keep you posted as the results come in.
